James Sherwood's Guide to London

Rick Steves interviews James Sherwood discussing the special areas of London that he relates in his book, James Sherwood's Discriminating Guide to London. They note that, though a lot of London has been spoiled by nouveau-riche, there is much of the city that has maintained old London charm.

Two other highly recommended locations to visit are Jermyn Street and the Burlington Arcade.

The Connaught Hotel (a very expensive 5-star hotel) has a very reasonably priced fixed price lunch. Carlos Place, Mayfair ( Marble Arch).

Places like the Ritz Hotel have ruined afternoon tea, but go there (assuming you are well dressed), go through the hotel to the terrace and order a drink. Enjoy one of the most secluded gardens in all of London for only a few pounds. 150 Piccadilly ( Green Park).

(In another Rick Steves interview with a couple of veteran London guides, they recommend for afternoon tea: Fortnam and Mason, 4th floor, 181 Piccadilly ( Piccadilly); The Montague, 15 Montague Street ( St. James's Park) - near the British Museum; and The Waldorf, Aldwych ( Covent Garden).
